CBD Infiltrates the Beauty Market

By now, cannabidiol is well known for its potential health benefits. It can be useful in mitigating chronic pain, managing certain mental conditions and reducing cancer-related symptoms like nausea. Additionally, some researchers have found CBD can even be effective in treating substance abuse.

Now CBD is also taking over the beauty industry. The component is being used in everything from face masks and lotions to mascara and hair styling products. Spas and salons are making it a key component of services like facials and deep conditioning treatments. Just like collagen, shea butter and aloe before it, CBD is currently the miracle cure-all ingredient on everyone’s lips.

But the inclusion of cannabidiol in beauty products is more than just a trend. CBD doesn’t only pose potential benefits inside of the body, it’s also a promising treatment when applied topically because of its anti-inflammatory effects on the skin. Here are three reasons CBD is being added to the beauty regimens of people around the globe.

Acne and Inflammation

In September 2014, The Journal of Clinical Investigation published a report looking at the potential benefits of CBD in skincare. According to the report, the combined lipostatic, antiproliferative, and antiinflammatory effects of CBD make the component a promising therapeutic agent for the treatment of acne.

CBD can help prevent acne by regulating cell growth which, left unchecked, can lead to skin issues. It can also help treat acne by reducing the inflammation caused by clogged pores. And unlike prescription acne medications, CBD only targets problem-causing cells, leaving healthy cells unaltered. This helps prevent over drying which can accelerate skin oil production and lead to more acne breakouts.

Dry Skin Treatments

The September 2014 report didn’t just indicate cannabidiol could be useful for treating acne, it also explained how the component could be used to address dry skin. According to the report, CBD was shown to have an effect on regulating skin oil production. Our sebaceous glands are designed to regulate oil production, but often times these glands don’t operate correctly. When these glands initiate too much oil production it can cause acne, but too little oil production can lead to dry skin and more severe skin conditions like eczema.

In recent years, many are turning to face oils to better moisturize dry skin. But face oils infused with CBD oil have added benefits. CBD is heavy in omega3 and 6s, which are essential for moisturizing dull skin. And since CBD molecules are extremely small, oils that contain this component are believed to be better at penetrating skin than other creams.

Anti-Aging Treatments

According to a 1998 study published in the National Academy of Sciences, CBD is a powerful antioxidant. The study found that CBD was effective in combating general cellular degradation through oxidation. And some believe it’s even more powerful than vitamins C and E which are often used to reduce free radicals that accelerate skin aging.

To utilize the anti-aging properties of cannabidiol, the beauty industry has created cannabidiol infused creams and oils that include a concentrated amount of the component. These topical products can be used to target wrinkles. Cannabidiol extract can also be taken in pill form, similar to other beauty vitamins designed to strengthen a person’s hair, skin and nails.

It’s very important to remember

As with other CBD products, research on the efficacy of CBD-based beauty products is scant. Beauty bloggers and writers at various online media sites have tested a variety of products, but the long term impact of these products is yet to be determined. It’s also unclear how cannabidiol-enriched products will react with the other products in a person’s skincare regimen. Despite these issues, CBD’s new status in the beauty industry doesn’t seem to be dissipating anytime soon.

The beauty market is only the latest in a string of industries beginning to embrace CBD. The applications for this component continue to grow and according to a report released in September, the CBD market is expected to reach $22 billion by 2022.
